Top 9 Key Nutrition Trends in 2025

After being a health and wellness coach for 13 years, I’ve been noticing some new trends in the world of nutrition. Here’s a brief recap with my personal insights and musings inspired by a report by the Kerry Health and Nutrition Institute. *

Trend 1. Personalized Nutrition 🧬

Vanessa’s Insight: We are all unique and need individual nutrition plans.

Trend: DATA!!

It’s really difficult for coaches, nutritionists, and doctors to get a sense of what is actually happening in a person’s everyday routine. Many people don’t really know how much they are eating or how intense they are working out. We also don’t know if what we are doing is making a difference. That’s why data is KEY and useful for everyone, both client and coach.

Where does the data come from?

·      Home Testing: You can now find online a variety of health testing, including DNA testing, hormone testing, and vitamin level physical test kits that are easy to order online and do at home. Keep in mind, results may vary, but it does put you more in control, especially if you’re not getting what you need from your GP.

·      Wearables: Tracking your vitals can give you so many clues on what’s going right (or wrong!) Have a look at wearables like Oura ring, Garmin watches or a glucose monitor. This lets you know how your habits and lifestyle are impacting your health. Common levers are managing sleep, food, drink, stress, and your fitness routine.

·      Apps: There are now apps that automate the food/mood journaling process. This helps you learn more about what impacts you and when.

Trend 2. Accessible Nutrition 🍎

Vanessa’s Insight: Dieting can be expensive, boring and tasteless!

Trend: This is about creating healthy yet affordable food plans regardless of income, location, or background.

The exciting part of this trend is the idea of creating “culturally appropriate” recipes that suit more than the Mediterranean lifestyle. It’s time to consider diet plans that include Hispanic, Indian, Halal, Kosher and other cultural foods that taste like home.

To be accessible, food plans need to be:

·      affordable

·      delicious

·      healthy

·      easy to prepare

·      deeply nourishing

·      relevant to our own tastes

·      culture appropriate

Trend 3. Weight and Blood Sugar Management 📉

Vanessa’s Insight: With the increasing use of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic for weight loss – many people are becoming nutrient deficient. They are not eating enough, period.

Trend: Bring the focus back towards nutrient-dense foods, particularly high-fiber, protein AND specific nutrients like iron, calcium, vitamin D, and B vitamins. And, remembering the importance of staying hydrated. Managing weight is important, but getting the right nutrients is even more important.

Trend 4. Healthy Aging and Longevity ✨

Vanessa’s Insight: As I turn 52 next month, how do I continue to support my body best?

Trend: There’s a huge focus from nutrition and supplement companies on supporting the parts of us that age the quickest – consider muscle and bone health, joint health, heart health, brain health, and immune health.

You’ll see more food products and supplements giving you high-protein, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and specific B vitamins. And more programs from fitness and health pro’s around keeping your muscles, joints, and heart pumping!

Trend 5. Post-biotics anyone? The Microbiome! 🧠

Vanessa’s Insight: The microbiome has a bigger impact on overall health than we originally thought… and it keeps getting more INTERESTING.

Trend: We know about prebiotics, probiotics and now we got POSTbiotics. Postbiotics include the waste left behind after your body digests both prebiotics and probiotics which provide a certain benefit to the body.

It’s going beyond gut and brain health, to include skin, sexual health and teeth and gum health too!

BTW: This means fermented foods and drinks will make a huge comeback.

Trend 6. Women's Health 🚺

Vanessa’s Insight: Most medical books are based on the male anatomy as the female anatomy has that rather complicated hormonal cycle.

Trend: Recognize that women’s nutritional needs change across her different life stages. So… what does a woman need from her first period, fertility, pregnancy, while breastfeeding, to being peri-menopausal and finally to post-menopause? Each phase is different, with different nutritional needs.

The trend includes apps that track menstrual cycle, physical symptoms and as well as at home hormone testing kits.

Trend 7. Reduce Salt and Sugar 🧂🚫

Vanessa’s Insight: Eating too much packaged and prepared foods impacts our health negatively – It’s time to recognize that it goes beyond weight gain! Too much sodium and sugar wreak havoc in the body.

Trend: Food producers will look at shifts towards simpler ingredients that are not only safe but impact the body less and governments will explore health plans around education and new food policies aimed at sodium reduction.

Trend 8. Shift Away from Processed Foods 👋

Vanessa’s Insight: People are now demanding minimally processed foods with clear labels and transparent sourcing information.

Trend: Easy to grab takeaway foods help us survive our crazy modern on-the-go lifestyles, but can’t food producers be more responsible about what goes into our food?

Influencers help by bringing our attention to the growing list of ingredients on packaging and what it means to your health. Fillers, pesticides and packaging make a difference to our health, especially to our digestion and microbiome.

You’ll see more recipe books and meal planning services coaching people on how to source, prep and cook with more whole food ingredients. (Which I can help with by the way ;-)

Trend 9. Sustainable Nutrition & Food Technology

Vanessa’s Insight: Actually, my biggest question… How do we feed the whole word – in a way that truly nourishes humans and our planet? I often wonder how to make a difference here…

Trend: Start investigating and reading up on these topics and ask yourself these 2 questions –

How can I bring more of these concepts to my everyday work? Or in my personal life?

·      Regenerative agriculture

·      Food waste reduction

·      Resilient supply chains

·      Quantified impact

·      Nutrient dense diet focus
