Relieve constipation while traveling
5 TIPS FOR GOOD DIGESTION ON THE ROAD
Normally when I travel, I panic about the food, because it seems like everything is fried and bread based, which is delicious, but my digestion really suffers and creates constipation every time.
Here is what I do to keep things in a good flow so I won’t get bloated or constipated.
Find a hotel with a breakfast buffet that has a wide variety of food.
Most hotels offer, bread, cheese, meats, cereals, and yogurt. It is still food, but not the kind that will keep your digestion flowing regularly.
Look for fresh fruit, salad, and vegetables.
Yes… a small green salad with strawberries and grapefruit is amazing in the morning. Don’t knock it, till you’ve tried it.
2. Bring a probiotic supplement with you and take it every day.
Reach out to your pharmacy and ask for a probiotic to keep you regular while on the go. Do not take a laxative which could be painful.
Probiotics support your digestive health.
3. Drink a lot and stay hydrated.
If you travel by air, you will be dehydrated. So, drink more than usual.
Remember you can choose soups, stews, and smoothies to hydrate.
Try drinking a small glass of water upon waking. This works better than coffee.
4. Go for a walk every day.
Walking calmly helps bring circulation to your pelvis, and lower abdomen.
The act of walking slowly, calms us down and switches on the “rest and digest” system in the body.
We also can digest thoughts and feelings.
If we walk with someone, we can spend time in connection.
5. Pack your snacks!
I have small .5L containers that I love. I fill them with sliced fresh fruit and veg, which my family gobbles up as soon as I open the container.
My favorites:
Apple
Orange
Grapes – purple and green
Peppers – red and yellow
Persimmon
Keep it simple!
Choose only one tip to start with and add in another the next time you travel.
And see what works best for you.
Are you constipated often?
If you’ve been consistently constipated for a longer period of time, consider seeing your doctor or pharmacist to check that there isn’t another disease or condition that may be causing your constipation.
In my case, I have a history of Autoimmune Hypothyroidism (Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis) which I use food and lifestyle to help me control. I check with my doctor once a year to make sure I am still well. In the past I needed medication to regulate my thyroid. It is important to check in regularly.
