How to keep your fitness level while travelling.

Normally when we travel, it feels a bit like holiday.

We eat out a lot, rules go out the window and exercise completely stops.

My story…

I used to work for Marlboro, based in Lausanne Switzerland. I had to travel every week for work. My projects were in Mexico, Russia, Spain, and Chicago in the USA. Since I was representing HQ – every lovely team invited me out for a special dinner in their country. Basically EVERYTHING was planned for me. Work in the office staring early, then work all day with the teams and of course a team dinner in the evening, plus a few drinks and then CRASH in bed.

I had no boundaries.

It wasn’t working for me. I didn’t feel good in my body.

I felt heavy, tired, my brain was full of information.

My belly was really not happy.

I knew something had to change.

Mindset first.

1.     Your body is keeping score.

Your mind might say, ahhh I am travelling it doesn’t matter or I cannot think about that right now. But your body is still keeping score. You will feel it.

2.     Find a reason WHY it’s important to exercise.

You want to perform well at work.

Keep your fitness level up, training for a race or ability.

Want to feel good, have good energy and a clear mind.

You get this with exercise. Even just a bit of it. It doesn’t need to take much time.

3.     Book time

Healthy Boundaries with work or family.

Trust me, you’re a better person after exercise.

Carve out minimum 15 - 30 minutes to take care of YOU.

TO GET INTO YOUR BODY

4. Here is how to start a workout routine while on the road.

  •  EASY - NO THINKING – no gear

  • Wake up 15-30 minutes earlier, roll out a towel on the floor and do weight bearing exercises like yoga, or traditional squats, press ups, dips on a chair or a HIIT video on YouTube.

  • PEOPLE SEEKER – bring your trainers and appropriate clothes.

  • Wake up 30 minutes earlier and go for a walk, run, or jog with a colleague.

  • Choose a healthier than you colleague… they will bring you forward.

  • Check that you are safe!

  • NEED A KICKSTART – bring trainers and workout clothing

  • Plan ahead of time. Search for a fitness center or gym and book a trainer for your first workout.

  • It cost money, but its motivating and builds confidence in the gym in that place.

  • Then go to the gym at least 3 times that week, even if you just show up.

Whatever you choose, get started with one tiny step.
